As chief medical officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the name “McCoy” has become synonymous with the concepts associated with medical excellence. A renowned exobiologist, many species from all corners of the Federation could find comfort in the knowledge that their maladies would be treated by one Dr. McCoy. While highly proficient at providing comfort to his fellow crew in times of need, Dr. McCoy was also capable of inspiring resolve in his commanding officers. Admiral James T. Kirk regarded Dr. McCoy as a close friend, and their conversations were vital in inspiring Kirk to return to exploring the stars that he so dearly loved. Following the return of Khan and the subsequent Battle of the Mutara Nebula, Dr. McCoy was of paramount importance in the observation and treatment of casualties incurred by the Enterprise crew. Although Captain Spock’s valiant sacrifice would be the turning point in the battle, the crew nonetheless would not have been capable of surviving the battle without Dr. McCoy’s efforts.
