Is it better for a career to burn hot and die out fast? Is your legacy more secure if you bow out while the value of your name is high? Is it possible for a legend to become a laughing stock? If you were to ask Sir Alexander Dane these questions, he would likely give you one answer: “Piss off.” Easily the most experienced cast member of the hit television series, Galaxy Quest, Sir Alexander is a stage actor by trade. Having played Richard the Third, Laertes, and King Duncan at various times on the West End, his name was synonymous with class, prestige, and quality. However, after having been convinced by his agent that a quick stint on a small, low-budget, science-fiction television series would be an easy paycheck, Dane quickly found that the luster of his career had dulled. His portrayal of Dr. Lazarus was popular, far too popular. Dane’s face became entangled with the character, so much so that it defined the remainder of his career as an actor. This “disgrace”, in his eyes, led to Dane becoming embittered and cynical, especially toward his “scene-stealing hack” of a co-star, Jason Nesmith. However, during their fight against Sarris, Dane’s cynical heart was warmed by the loyalty and ingenuity of the Thermians, and he finally accepted his role as the kind, brave Dr. Lazarus. When he and his newfound friends returned to Earth, he enthusiastically agreed to return with the rest of the cast in the sequel series, Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues.
