In the 23rd century, the Borg Collective invaded the El-Aurian homeworld. The assimilation of the El-Aurians was swift and brutal, with their culture and way of life decimated in mere moments. As millions of El-Aurians were either assimilated or killed, a small number of survivors were scattered to the stars. Following their escape from the Borg, a contingent of 415 El-Aurian refugees were traveling to Earth when their transport vessels, the SS Lakul and SS Robert Fox, became trapped in a powerful and erratic energy ribbon which acted as a doorway to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. With the destruction of the transport ships by the forces of the energy ribbon deemed an inevitability, the U.S.S. Enterprise-B launched a rescue mission, managing to rescue 47 El-Aurian refugees in the process. Romi was one of those survivors.
