Many speak of “unsung heroes” aboard starships. Those intrepid souls who man the engines, run vital diagnostics or keep the very lights on. Their work will win them no fame, nor will they go down in history as heroes, but they are vital nonetheless. And none aboard the Enterprise could claim to be more vital than Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. Multi-lingual from a young age, Uhura had a fascination with language and communication. She was fluent in Swahili by the time she could walk and had an aptitude for mathematics before she started school. No-one was surprised when this prodigy enlisted in Starfleet. Uhura quickly made a name for herself as someone intelligent, reliable and extremely capable. She was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise as its department head of the communications section and was directly responsible for communications aboard Starfleet’s flagship vessel. Her quick-thinking, diplomatic nature and intelligence won many victories for the Enterprise. Her skillset was so varied that she was even able to man the helm, navigation, and main science station when the need arose.
